Understand your energy. Make better choices.
Updated 14 October 2026
Before buying a smart device, find out what you want to measure or control. A lower purchase price does not always mean a lower total cost.
Power is not energy
Watts (W) describe power. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe energy used over time. Multiply average power in watts by hours of use, then divide by 1,000.
Example: a constant 1,000 W load used for two hours consumes 2 kWh. At a hypothetical price of €0.30 per kWh, the energy costs €0.60. This excludes fixed charges and other bill components.
Measure before you automate
A plug-in energy meter can help you measure one compatible appliance. A smart plug may let you switch it on remotely, but energy monitoring is a separate feature. Check the exact model, supported load, local plug standard and voltage.
Compare the whole setup
- Does it need a hub or subscription?
- Can you use it if the internet connection stops working?
- Can you see cumulative energy use, rather than only instantaneous power?
- Are the app and support available in your country?
Energy offers are local
Use your country’s official comparison resources where available. Compare the same annual usage and check fixed charges, price duration and variable-price conditions. Italian offers and prices should not be used to estimate a contract in another country.
